A large transport vessel drifting in the Atlantic Ocean broke out in flames on February 16th, which caused the electric vehicles the ship was transporting batteries to ignite. It can be a complicated matter to respond and extinguish a fire outbreak in such a large vessel, but with the added danger of the condition brought on by batteries overheating and discharging toxic and corrosive materials, further efforts were required.

When dealing with lithium battery fires, normal extinguishing methods are often ineffective, making it much more difficult for safety personnel and firefighters to respond to the situation. In the case of this marine vessel, it’s reported that it took firefighters several days to fully extinguish the outbreak, in which total damages is currently being assessed.
While a power surge in these situations is almost unavoidable, fire outbreaks can be mitigated with proper monitoring technology.
